Renowned Mexican artist Karla de Lara and Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel, located in the heart of historic San Miguel de Allende, have announced a new collaboration following the artist’s successful exhibition on property in November 2022. From March 8-11, 2023, Casa de Sierra Nevada will be hosting ‘Ritual’, an immersive masterclass by Karla de Lara, which will be the first she has hosted in her career. Set amongst the historic buildings and charming character of Casa de Sierra Nevada, guests will have the unique opportunity to delve into the creative spirit of San Miguel de Allende and exclusively experience Karla de Lara’s first-ever masterclass, an exclusive multi-day itinerary of hands-on workshops and one-on-one sessions.
 

A WORLD-CLASS ARTIST  

Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Karla de Lara is a Mexican visual artist of great global recognition, with more than 350 solo exhibitions around the world. She is a painter, sculptor, muralist, and poet, celebrated for her distinctive high-gloss technique and unique use of ink and wax. The acclaimed artist is widely considered the ‘Mother of Hyperrealist Pop Art’ by international art critics, as the themes she expresses within this genre are exaggerated versions of hyper pop inspired by the entertainment industry and infused with references to the collective imagination. De Lara has been the recipient of a variety of extraordinary awards over the years, including the International Prize Barcelona in 2022, the Art Olympic Prize of Greece in 2021 and the Rafaello & Canova International Prize of Italy in 2020, among others.

AN ARTISTIC VOYAGE  

The ‘Ritual’ masterclass will kick off on Wednesday, March 8 at Casa de Sierra Nevada, with a cocktail party to welcome guests. Throughout the week, participating guests will enjoy a la carte breakfast at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, Andanza, and will embark on a journey of enriching workshops under the guidance of Karla de Lara:
 

• Thursday, March 9, 2023

  • Morning Session (10:00am – 1:00pm):  Each guest will receive a project kit, complete with all materials needed to create their very own masterpiece. Karla de Lara will explain the process of the materials to be used, and guests will execute the initial tracing of their work. De Lara will then guide the group through her artistic technique of shading and highlighting utilizing liquid wax.

  • Afternoon Session (4:00pm – 7:00pm): The afternoon session will focus on color, as Karla de Lara addresses the handling of colored inks and their usage in her own works. De Lara will teach guests her special technique when using ink, from mixing to application. Guests will also discover how to give balance to their paintings with color.

• Friday, March 10, 2023

  • Morning Session (10:00am – 1:00pm): Once the canvases from the previous day’s inking are dry, Karla de Lara will explain the process of light extraction and high gloss detailing that each guest will give to their painting.

  • Afternoon Session (4:00pm – 7:00pm): De Lara will guide guests through the final steps of the masterclass, teaching them how to use solid wax to highlight their works, resulting in added drama and contouring.

  • Private Dinner (7:00pm): The inspiring week will come to a close with an indulgent private dinner of contemporary Mexican cuisine with Karla de Lara, hosted at Casa de Sierra Nevada’s e restaurant, Andanza.
