Art, nature and history in the new Belmond campaign in Brazil

Press release

Ballet dancer Thiago Soares stars a ‘manifesto film’ at Copacabana Palace and Hotel das Cataratas

1 January, 2020

To move. To thrill. To impress. Belmond's new campaign in Brazil, Commovere (in Latin, to move strongly, to cause a living emotion and to be impressed), brings out all the feelings provoked by the beauty of dance, history and nature. The protagonist of the campaign's ‘film-manifesto’, Thiago Soares takes his movements to the two properties of the group in Brazil, Copacabana Palace, in Rio de Janeiro, and Hotel das Cataratas, the only hotel located in the National Park of Iguassu Falls, Paraná. The campaign will be officially launched on October 1, 2020.

The moment that the doors of the world begin to reopen and the experience of leaving home becomes possible, the campaign instigates the traveler: if you could travel, would you go to a place full of stories or one that was among the seven wonders of nature? General director of Belmond in Brazil says that the idea was to combine dream and reality, art and street, movement and silence, contradictions and complementarities of life most exposed during the pandemic. “The campaign brings all these elements together: the vibrant energy of the carioca, the sea breeze, the golden sunset, the Atlantic Forest, the Iguazu Falls, the sound of birds, this unique nature”.

Star of the world dance and being the first dancer of the Royal Ballet of London, Thiago narrates this story through his choreography. He returned to Brazil after 20 years abroad, precisely in the midst of the pandemic, and then found a purpose for dancing. “The film started from finding a reason to do what I do. And that involved choosing where I would dance and why, ”he explains. “I would start dancing in a place like Copa, in my city, where I came from, and bringing the message not only to review our dance, but to rethink our priorities, which is what really matters. Playing, but in a more reflective way, to gain strength to follow ”, completes Thiago, born in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio, and raised in the Vila Isabel neighborhood. This was the first “performance” after his professional farewell to the stages in February.

While the theaters remain closed or unable to receive shows and the routines of professionals in the area have not yet been fully resumed, the Belmond hotels - before reopening on August 20 - became more than special stages for Thiago's adventure: film your stories intertwine. With 97 years, Copacabana Palace received the dancer in its traditional ballrooms Nobre and Golden Room. Hotel das Cataratas, in the year of commemoration of its 62 years, offered its balcony with an unparalleled view to the Iguassu Falls and the Tarobá Bar to be dance scenarios. “Copa and Cataratas have the face of Brazil and references like “Sun God”, the biggest protagonist, and water, something kind of wild, that comes to wash our souls”, defines Thiago.
